Gneu Updates – Bring on the Ogre

It’s been a long summer, and I have been quite a busy bee, so please bear with me as we go through the updates to Gneu over the last 3 months.

General

I turned 24 in may and made the choice to get my life straightened out and headed in the direction I have known it was supposed to be going for quite some time. I am a programmer at heart and intend on making an impact in a few lives by the time my carpals and tunnels give way to old age. My route is going to be game development and as such I have been moving, steadily, towards understanding game engines and architecture in ways I had no idea about only months ago.

HL2 & Valve paved the way but it really didn’t do much to explain why things were so fucked up in their code, so much more like a sheer cliff. Ogre has opened my eyes to see that HL2 was really a veneer that I really didn’t understand too well. I have been surprised by the cleanliness of the Ogre codebase left and right, which I suppose says a lot about valve, or that it says a lot more about Steve Streeting, the lead developer of the Ogre Renderer. I have spent a good amount of time over the last 5 months in unlearning HL2 practices, learning better ways of doing things I used to spend far too much time on.

That said I have a few games and demos coming Gneu’s way. Below you will find a few links and game/demo ideas that I have been tossing around for a while. I have adapted to the release early & often mentality, which has always been intuitive to me anyways, so expect lots of iteration on the site, time permitting.

Forums, Wiki & Bug tracker updates

I have finally gotten the time topics together for my PHP development series and will be posting them on the wiki as I complete each section. The most recent additions to the document spread are going to be related to what I’ve learned about creating a User System in PHP. There is a lot to say about this, so in order to organize things for myself I created a brainstorming tree that helps organize my thoughts. It’s not in much of an order but it displays my thought tree in a fashion that leaves me satisfied. I have also gotten back into my C Programming book, and will be extending that soon, and possibly entering information into it about eh SDL and making some entries on the topic C++, exclusively. There has been a ton of information I have combed together over the years, and It’s all spewing out.

There have been many updates to the software on the site, for instance the forum is now powered by PHPBB 3.0, which is fucking amazing. I don’t think that I have to say that, but you should all check it out. I have had it suggested that I lock down the forum and wiki, and force people to register in order to actually get to the information that I have stored therein. I am debating it and will pass judgment soon. The bug tracker is finally getting some tread, since I have gone back into developing websites. I built the first one that puts my GneuManager learned techniques to use with Page Registration and all that jazz.I have been pretty well impressed with its functionality so far, and would love for some volunteers to help me out with testing it. That about sums it up. School starts up in a month so I have one more month of down time to focus on my development and writing, so expect some other changes in the future.
